July 30, 1971: Apollo 15 Mission

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 15 Mission, which saw David Scott and James Irwin land in Falcon on the moon with the first Lunar Rover.

July 29, 1981: Charles, Prince of Wales, weds Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul's Cathedral in London

Today is the 30th anniversary of the wedding of Prince Charles Windsor and Lady Diana Spencer. Over 700 million people around the world watched the wedding. They would have two sons, William and Henry. They would later divorce on August 28, 1996, after 15 years of marriage. A year later, on August 31, 1997, Princess Diana would perish, along with boyfriend Dodi Fayed, in a car crash in Paris.

July 27, 1981: John Walsh's 6 year-old son Adam is kidnapped

Today is the 30th anniversary of the kidnapping of Adam Walsh. While shopping in a mall with his mother, Adam Walsh went missing. He would be found dead two weeks later. It was this incident that led to the career of his father, John Walsh, as a victims' advocate for justice. The Code Adam that many stores participate in is named after Adam Walsh.

July 20, 1976: The American Viking 1 successfully lands on Mars

Today is the 35th anniversary of the first lander landing on the surface of Mars. The Viking 1 Lander (and its sister ship the Viking 2) was the first probe from Earth to land on Mars intact.

July 16, 1941: Joe DiMaggio Hits Safely for the 56th Consecutive Game

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the 56th game in Yankee Joe DiMaggio's famous hitting streak in 1941. While this streak ended at 56, he went on a 16 game streak to finish the season. He hit safely in 72 out of 73 games that year.

July 14, 1881: Billy the Kid is Shot and Killed by Pat Garrett outside Fort Sumner

Today is the 130th anniversary of the killing of Billy the Kid. Billy the Kid, born William Henry McCarty, was a young outlaw known for stealing horses and cattle. He was arrested in December of 1880. He was convicted and sentenced to death. That following April, he escaped from jail by killing two guards. He was hunted down by Sheriff Pat Garrett, who shot and killed him in July 14, 1881.

Today is the 90th anniversary of former President William Howard Taft's swearing in as the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He is the only person to ever be both President and Chief Justice.

July 10, 1921: Belfast's Bloody Sunday

Today is the 90th anniversary of Belfast's Bloody Sunday. During the Irish War of Independence, Protestants and Catholics fought against each other for control of Ireland. The Irish Republican Army (Catholics) were seeking independence from British rule (Protestants). On July 10, 1921, 16 people lost their lives and 161 houses were destroyed.

July 5, 1971: The Twenty-Sixth Amendment is Certified by President Nixon

Today is the 40th anniversary of the Twenty-Sixth Amendment, which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. It was passed by Congress on March 23, 1971, ratified by 3/4 of the states on July 1, 1971, and certified by President Richard Nixon on July 5, 1971.

Today is the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Freedom of Information Act into law. This allows the average citizen to gain access to federal agency records unless the records are protected by one of nine exemptions.
