On August 21, 1959, Hawaii was finally admitted to the Union. It is the only state made up entirely of islands.
In promotion of our new database, American History in Video, I'm including a link to a Universal Newsreels clip from August 24, 1959. This clip includes shots of President Eisenhower welcoming Hawaii as the 50th state.

As you all know, I mentioned that the Earl K. Long Library had won a year-long subscription to the American History in Video database. Of course, you must be on campus or have a UNO ID to access this database. However, you have to explore it! It is amazing what clips can be found there. Including this one, First Ladies: North & South.
