December 1, 1981: AIDS virus is officially recognized

Today is the 30th anniversary of the AIDS virus being officially recognized. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimate that one million people are living with HIV in the U.S. They also estimate that 20% of those infected are unaware that they have the disease.

World AIDS Day 2009: Universal Access and Human Rights

In 2007, it was estimated that 455,636 people were living with AIDS in America.  An estimated 8,491 of those people were living in Louisiana.  An additional 7,738 were living with HIV in Louisiana.  Of those people, 9,227 were living in the New Orleans area. (Statistics from AVERT.)

AIDS is still a problem--for homosexuals and heterosexuals, for women and men, for children, for everyone.  Your gender, race, and sexual orientation won't protect you.  Your age, religion, and ethnicity don't make you immune.  Know the facts and help fight the spread of this terrible disease.
