President James Buchanan's Birthday

Today marks the 218th birthday of our 15th president, James Buchanan. President Buchanan served from 1857-1861 and was known as "Old Buck." It was during his administration that the South would begin seceding from the Union. While he denied the legal right of states to secede, he also held that the Federal Government could not legally prevent them from doing so.
