One hundred years ago today, the hull of the ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic was launched. At the time, it was the largest passenger steamship in the world. After the ship scraped its starboard side on an iceberg, the hull buckled in several places on April 14, 1912, leading to the opening of compartments and sinking of the ship.

Originally known as Decoration Day, the first Memorial Day was held on May 30, 1868 in Arlington National Cemetary--just three years after the end of the Civil War.

Today, the Friday before Memorial Day, is Don't Fry Day...a day devoted to skin cancer awareness. Practice safe sun! And remember, about 65% of melanomas are associated with sun exposure (UV radiation).

Holocaust Remembrance Day
Yesterday, May 1st, was Holocaust Remembrance Day. To honor all those who suffered through the Holocaust, I think it is important to remember what happened and work hard to keep it from happening again. So I'm sharing the episode of Secrets of the Dead entitled Escape from Auschwitz. It is the story of the two men who escaped Auschwitz in order to warn Hungarian Jews of the tragic fate of Polish Jews.
