President Lyndon Baines Johnson's Birthday

Today marks the 101st birthday of our 36th president, Lyndon Baines Johnson. President Johnson served from 1963 to 1969 and was known as “LBJ.” Because of the Vietnam War, he is known as one of the least popular presidents in American History. To learn more, click on these links:

Sen. Edward "Ted" Kennedy (1932-2009)

Senator Ted Kennedy passed away last night at the age of 77 from brain cancer.  He was best known as the last surviving Kennedy son.  The brother of President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, Ted served as a U.S. Senator for Massachussetts for 47 years (1962-2009).

He is also well known for a car accident on the island Chappaquiddick.  This incident on July 18, 1969 resulted in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne (a former campaign worker for Robert Kennedy).  This was a national scandal that Sen. Kennedy was never able to fully escape.

50th Anniversary of Hawaii Statehood

On August 21, 1959, Hawaii was finally admitted to the Union.  It is the only state made up entirely of islands.

In promotion of our new database, American History in Video, I'm including a link to a Universal Newsreels clip from August 24, 1959.  This clip includes shots of President Eisenhower welcoming Hawaii as the 50th state.

As you all know, I mentioned that the Earl K. Today marks the 176th birthday of our 23rd president, Benjamin Harrison. President Harrison served from 1889 to 1893 and was known as “Kid Gloves Harrison” and "Little Ben."  He was one of the first to conduct a "front-porch" campaign.  He was also the second president to lose the popular vote but win the electoral vote.  To learn more, click on these links:

President William Clinton's Birthday

Today marks the 63rd birthday of our 42nd president, William Jefferson Clinton. President Clinton served from 1993 to 2001.  He was the second U.S. President to be impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives.  However, he was found not guilty by the Senate.  In spite of the scandal that marked his presidency, he was one of the U.S.'s most popular presidents.  He was also successful in dispatching peace-keeping forces to Bosnia and expanding NATO.  To learn more, click on these links:

The Manson Family Murders

This past weekend marked the 40th anniversary of the Tate-LaBianca murders committed by members of the Manson Family.

In the early hours of August 9th, 1969, Sharon Tate (26 years old, 8 months pregnant), Jay Sebring (35 years old), Voityct Frokowsky (37 years old), Abigail Folger (26 years old), and Steven Parent (18 years old) were viciously murdered by members of the Manson Family.  The murderers were later identified as Susan Atkins, Charles 'Tex' Watson, and Patricia Krenwinkel.   The murders were committed on Charles Manson's orders.

The next night, in the early hours of August 10th, 1969, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca (44 and 38 years old, respectively) were murdered by Leslie Van Houten, Steve 'Clem' Grogan, Susan Atkins, Charles 'Tex' Watson, and Patricia Krenwinkel, again on orders from Charles Manson.  This time, he accompanied his "family" to the scene.  Linda KAsabian was present for both massacres but claims that she did not participate in the murders.

These events are a horrifying part of American history and should not be forgotten.

For more information on the crimes, check out the truTV Crime Library: Charles Manson and the Manson Family
